We are finally back! After what seems like an eternity, dealing with a pandemic, health issues, and more, we are finally back to travelling. It's been a long time, and we could not be happier.
Kelly and I set off to St. John's for our oldest son Tyler's Birthday on Wednesday past for the day. We had a wonderful time as we hadn't seen him for months. We went to Signal Hill, had a great drive through Petty Harbour and a cake to celebrate his birthday.
While driving, we were talking about what we were going to do this weekend. We decided we are going to take a day trip to Twillingate and Fairbank to see if there were any icebergs left around the area. We made a plan and geared up for Saturday and hit the road around 12 o'clock.
We were enjoying the drive listening to our favorite radio station, The Coast 101.1 located in St. John's. You can listen anywhere with the RadioPlayer Canada app. We had to gas up in Lewisporte, a wonderful little town in Central Newfoundland with plenty of things to see and do. We will be returning here later as we were on another mission to Twillingate. After a "splash and dash" at the gas station, we pulled onto Route 340 also known as the Road to the Isles. This is a very scenic drive with plenty of little towns to visit along the way.
We decided we would pass those by on this trip as we have limited time to get our adventure in. We will be doing a longer trip later this year all around the area. (More on that later). We landed in Twillingate at around 1:30 pm and no longer than about 30 seconds into the town, ICEBERG STRAIGHT AHEAD (in my best titanic movie voice). We parked Ruby our F150 and got out to get a few photos. While walking along the beach we found a piece of ice that had broken off the main 'berg. I picked it up and brought it to Colin so he could hold and touch a real iceberg. He was super excited.
After we put the bergy bit back on the beach so others could check it out and enjoy it, we hopped back into the truck and made our way to the Long Point lighthouse Parks Canada - Long Point (Twillingate) Lighthouse . It is one of the main tourist attractions in the area. The lighthouse is about a 5 min drive from the main town of Twillingate in a neighboring town of Crow Head. The drive meanders through little areas above the seashore on the cliffs providing amazing views of the area. At one point there was a charter ship just pulling into the harbour. It was an impressive boat to say the least. I would love to spend some time traveling around the island on that!

Just a couple of mins up the road we get to the lighthouse. There are viewing platforms to look out over the ocean atop the cliffs that the parking lot and lighthouse sit atop. This lighthouse has been in operation since 1876. It has been part of my childhood as my family is from the area and I have been here many times. It is a must see attraction if you ever come to the area. There is a museum where there are many items from over the lighthouse's history that you can view. We took the tour which included the tower tour. We highly recommend this as the views from the top of the tower are spectacular.
We were fascinated with the items inside the lighthouse and the history of everything there. I am turning into a history nut and all the stories that are out there waiting to be shared. I was taking all the information in regarding the distinct items and stories told about each one. When we return later this year, I am going to have more time to take notes and emerse into the entire history of the lighthouse. Here are some of the items that are displayed in the museum which was the lighthouse keeper's house.
After about 30 minutes of looking around the lighthouse museum we got back in ruby and had a rumbly in our tumblies. We were hungry. We decided to visit a great little pub and brewery called the Stage Head. They have a brewery there called Split Rock brewing. I remember sampling a lot of the products before my wonderful wheat allergy, so I can recommend the products from them. Alas, I can no longer sample any of them. We went in and were greeted with great music and atmosphere as usual. The staff were great and ensured our food was cooked in the gluten free fryer so as to not cross contaminate it. We (Kelly and I) had nachos, and Colin sampled their fries. All the food and drinks were very delicious, and the portion sizes were great. You will not be leaving hungry or thirsty after visiting here.
We enjoyed an awesome meal and drinks and hit the road to start heading back home. We had to visit one more place before we left the area. The town of Fairbank/Hillgrade where my father lived as a child. This tiny town has amazing charm. Next time we are here I will be taking many more photos and videos to show you all. Our family has a tourism business called Friday's Bay Cottages ( Home | Friday's Bay Cottages ) including 10 cottages, a boat tour that is available to see icebergs, whales, and other amazing sights. Lorne and Julia have an amazing business built and really provide a once in a lifetime experience for their clients who stay with them. Please check them out if you are heading this way. It's worth the trip to stay with them. Colin met some new family members here and was excited to see more iceberg bits they returned with from their boat tour. We are extremely excited to return here this September to spend a few days around the area.
Upon saying goodbye to Friday's Bay, we got back in Ruby and made the drive back to Grand Falls-Windsor where our amazing husky Mekia was waiting for us to get in the door. This was another awesome day trip that we had been needing for a long time. I didn't think four weeks ago from Saturday, when I was lying in bed in the hospital recovering from surgery that we would be doing trips again that soon. I am grateful we are back on the move. There will be many more adventures from this point out as we have the bug to explore again!
Thanks for visiting and sharing our stories. Please share with everyone you know to spread the word of the Autism Family Travels family!
